How to compare CNC machining quotes in Ireland
There is no single price for a machined part. A CNC quote is built from machine time, material, setup, finishing, inspection and quantity, and changing any one of them moves the number. Use this guide to understand why two Irish shops may quote the same drawing differently.
Treat any online price range as orientation only. The useful question is not "what should CNC cost?" but "what information does a shop need to price this part without guessing?" A strong brief includes a STEP file or drawing, material, quantity, critical tolerances, finish, inspection needs, deadline, and whether repeat batches are likely.
The six things on every quote
1. Machine time
Ask whether machine time is itemised or bundled and which process assumptions were used. Cycle time can change with geometry, material, workholding, tooling and inspection. cnc.ie does not publish an Irish hourly-rate claim without current attributable supplier evidence.
2. Material
Specify the required material designation, condition, certification and acceptable alternatives. Ask the supplier to separate raw material, minimum-order quantity, cutting allowance and material certification where applicable. See the materials guide for briefing questions.
3. Setup and programming
Ask how programming, workholding, tooling and first-off proving are charged and whether those costs recur after a drawing revision or later reorder. Do not assume a setup is reusable until the supplier confirms revision and retention terms.
4. Finishing
List the required finish, governing specification, colour or appearance criteria, masking, inspection and packaging. Ask whether finishing is subcontracted and request separate price and schedule assumptions. See the tolerances and finishes guide.
5. Tolerances and inspection
Do not assume a universal “standard tolerance” or that inspection is included. Put critical dimensions, datums, surface requirements and the required measurement record on the drawing or request. Ask the supplier to identify any feature it cannot quote as written.
6. Quantity
Request separate prices for the quantities you may genuinely order. Per-unit price may change as setup is allocated differently, but material purchasing, tooling, inspection, finishing, packaging and capacity can also change the result.

Compare quotes only after every supplier has priced the same revision, quantity and scope. Resolve exclusions and assumptions in writing before selecting a supplier.
How to remove avoidable ambiguity
Have the responsible designer review which tolerances and features are function-critical. State permitted material alternatives, expected quantities and inspection evidence.
